Learner response: OSP assessment

Create a new blog post on your Media 1 Exam blog called 'OSP assessment learner response' and complete the following tasks:

1. Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

Feedback for Q1 is more analysis of the product rather than explaining the theory.

WWW is Sandeep, your Q2 is focused and clear and offers logic in how digital convergence has been demonstrated through both OSP CSPs.

Next steps: Your essay does not add enough depth or detail for both CSPs, e.g. industry behind both CSPs, figures for engagement. Theory is lacking for Q2 too. See the mark scheme for examples of reference. Also remember this question is a synoptic question, so you need to draw on other CSPs from the whole course.

2. Read the whole mark scheme for this assessment carefully (posted on your Google Classroom). Identify three specific aspects from Figure 1 (the Bioshock Infinite game cover) that you could have mentioned in your answer (e.g. selection of images, colour scheme, text etc).

Selection of the image: Booker DeWitt positioned centrally in a three-quarter pose holding a gun, clearly establishing him as the protagonist and suggesting action and conflict.

Colour scheme: The red, white and blue of the American flag contrasted with the flames, creating a striking and symbolic visual linked to American identity and danger.

Typography and text: The BioShock Infinite title in the franchise’s recognisable font, anchoring the game within an established brand while the word “Infinite” suggests scale and complexity.

3. Now use the mark scheme to identify three potential points that you could have made in your essay for Question 2 (Jenkins - participatory culture or Curran and Seaton's - concentration of ownership).

Jenkins – Participatory Culture: Digital platforms allow audiences to actively participate, share, remix and circulate content, for example Swifties creating theories, TikToks and fan content that extend Taylor Swift’s brand beyond official releases.

Curran and Seaton – Concentration of Ownership: Despite digital convergence appearing to democratise media, ownership is still concentrated among major platforms (e.g. Spotify, YouTube, Meta), which shape how The Voice and Taylor Swift distribute content.

Shirky – End of Traditional Gatekeeping: Audiences now choose when and how to consume media, shown through streaming, social media feeds and on-demand access rather than scheduled or linear consumption.

4. Write down two other CSPs from across the course that you could have referenced in your essay which link to digital convergence in relation to production, distribution and consumption and how they have impacted their products.

Score Hero Hair Cream advert: The campaign demonstrates digital convergence through online-first advertising and social media distribution. The advert is designed to be shared across platforms such as YouTube and Instagram, encouraging audience engagement and peer-to-peer circulation. This shows how production is shaped by digital platforms, distribution relies on social media algorithms, and consumption is active, with audiences liking, sharing and commenting on branded content. The advert also targets a niche Black male audience, showing how convergence allows brands to reach specific communities directly.

Sephora – Black Beauty Is Beauty campaign: Sephora’s campaign demonstrates digital convergence by combining social media marketing, influencer partnerships and e-commerce. Content is distributed across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, often linking directly to Sephora’s online store. Audiences consume the campaign across multiple platforms and participate through reviews, tutorials and user-generated content, reinforcing Jenkins’ participatory culture and showing how convergence impacts production, distribution and consumption simultaneously.

5. Use your exam response, the mark scheme and any other resources you wish to use to write a detailed essay plan for Question 2. Make sure you are planning at least three well-developed paragraphs in addition to an introduction (thesis statement) and conclusion.

Question: To what extent have digitally convergent media platforms had an impact on the production, distribution and consumption of media products?

Introduction (Thesis Statement)

Digitally convergent media platforms have had a significant impact on the production, distribution and consumption of media products, fundamentally reshaping how media industries operate and how audiences engage with content. While convergence has empowered audiences and creators, it has also reinforced corporate power and commercialisation. This can be clearly seen through the CSPs of The Voice and Taylor Swift.

Paragraph 1 – Impact on Production

Digitally convergent platforms influence how content is designed from the outset.

The Voice produces content optimised for online platforms, using SEO headlines, mobile-friendly layouts and multimedia storytelling (Jenkins – convergence culture).

Taylor Swift creates music videos and promotional material with multi-platform circulation in mind (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram).

Link to Hesmondhalgh: digital production can reduce risk and costs, but still operates within commercial constraints.

Judgement: Production is heavily shaped by convergence, but still controlled by industry priorities.

Paragraph 2 – Impact on Distribution

Distribution is no longer linear or platform-specific.

Taylor Swift’s simultaneous global releases across streaming platforms show the power of digital convergence.

The Voice relies on social media and search algorithms rather than traditional print circulation.

Apply Curran and Seaton: despite wider access, power remains concentrated in major digital platforms.

Judgement: Convergence widens reach but does not fully decentralise media power.

Paragraph 3 – Impact on Consumption

Audiences consume media actively rather than passively.

Swifties exemplify Jenkins’ participatory culture, creating and sharing content that adds meaning and value.

The Voice audiences interact through comments, shares and analytics-driven content circulation.

Judgement: Consumption has been transformed the most by convergence, with audiences gaining greater agency.

Apply Shirky: decline of traditional gatekeepers as audiences control when and how they engage.

Conclusion

Overall, digitally convergent media platforms have had a substantial impact on production, distribution and especially consumption. While audiences appear empowered through participation and choice, media industries such as those behind The Voice and Taylor Swift continue to operate within concentrated systems of ownership and profit. Therefore, convergence has transformed media practices to a large extent, but not without reinforcing existing power structures.

6. Finally, identify three key areas you plan to revise from the OSP unit before the January mock exams (e.g. CSP elements of media theories) having looked at your feedback from this assessment.

Applying media theory accurately, particularly Jenkins, Curran and Seaton, Shirky and Hesmondhalgh.

Adding industry context and data, such as ownership structures, engagement figures and revenue models.

Synoptic links across CSPs, ensuring I draw on examples from the whole course rather than only the named products.
