Narrative
1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.
In 3 Idiots the narrative follows Todorov's structure:
Equilibrium The film begins with three friends at an engineering college, showcasing their carefree college life.
Disequilibrium The pressure of academic performance and a tragic event (the suicide of a friend) disrupts their lives.
New Equilibrium The characters learn valuable life lessons and pursue their passions, culminating in a positive resolution.
2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.
Setting: The scene drops us right into a charming village in Uttar Pradesh. With its green fields and traditional homes, it paints a picturesque picture of rural life. This cosy setting contrasts sharply with the protagonist's city background, hinting at the comedic and heartfelt challenges he’s about to face.
Character: We meet Abhishek, a young engineer who’s reluctantly taken a job as the Panchayat secretary. His awkwardness and frustration are evident as he navigates the village. You can instantly relate to his discomfort—he’s out of his element, surrounded by locals who seem to live a completely different life.
Plot: The story kicks off when Abhishek arrives in the village, setting the stage for his journey. His initial interactions with the villagers are filled with misunderstandings and humour, giving us a taste of the cultural clashes he will encounter. This makes you curious about how he will adapt to his new role and connect with the community.
3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
Raj Malhotra from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Embodies the hero's journey as he fights for love against familial opposition.
Aamir Khan in Lagaan Represents the hero who leads his community against injustice through cricket.
Kabir Singh from Kabir Singh A flawed hero navigating the complexities of love and personal demons.
4) Give an example of a binary opposition.
In Kuch Kuch Hota Hai the binary opposition of love versus friendship is central to the narrative, illustrating the tension between romantic desires and platonic relationships.
5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?
The winner often embodies the prevailing ideas and values of our culture. For instance, when a policeman apprehends a criminal in a crime drama, it highlights the ideology that upholds law and order.
6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
Enigma codes create suspense and intrigue, compelling audiences to seek answers, while action codes provide thrilling moments that engage viewers, enhancing their emotional investment in the story.
